Yurii Olesha adapted THE CONSPIRACY OF FEELINGS in 1928 from his highly successful novel ENVY. Premiering at the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1929, it became one of the most celebrated and controversial plays of the period between the wars. The story revolves around a pathetic young drifter named Kavalerov, whose loathing for life under the new Soviet regime is personified by his grossly successful benefactor Andrei Babichev, a sausage manufacturer. When Andrei’s brother Ivan appears in town rallying for a “conspiracy of feelings” to protest the cold rationalism of the new era, Kavalerov’s dream of a return to former times is rekindled. But has history’s hand already been played? The CONSPIRACY OF FEELINGS is a satire about conflicting values in the Marxist-Leninist state of the 1920s.
