Young women from around the world, hosted by International House at Columbia University come together at a RACH-C Salon to explore the experiences of Russian woman leaders and compare and share their own experiences in finding their own place, in a world where men still dominate.

This Salon focused on the work of documentary maker Irina Vodar who incredibly managed to gain permission from the Russian government to interview and film women imprisoned in one of today's Russian Prisons.

MOSCOW, RUSSIA CONFERENCE “DESCENDENTS OF DISTINGUISHED COMPATRIOTS ABROAD”, “PRESIDENT HOTEL”, MOSCOW.
Honored guests included descendents of Sikorsky, Sheremetev, Pushkin, Shalyapin, Witte, Rodzyanko, Shakhovsky, etc. Prominent among the children and grandchildren of the highly regarded and respected forebears was Dr. Patricia Thompson, accomplished author and CUNY Professor herself, who is also known as Elena Vladimirovna Mayakovskaya, the only child of the world renown poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Dr. Thompson, a very active member of the advisory Board of the Russian American Cultural Center Olga Zatsepina, PhD, as she received the Lomonosov medal from the Chairman of the Non-Government Committee of Russia, Viktor Shevchenko.
All who attended gave high praise for the organizing of the event and voiced appreciation for the opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of so many of their contemporaries. Despite the importance and renown of their families, many had never met before and never before had so many of them been in the same room together. Responding to comments from the attendees, Dr. Zatsepina indicated that RACH-C will consider ways to bring at least those distinguished compatriots who live in the United States together again, in New York.

MAGDALENA LLAMAS- MEZZO-SOPRANO (M.M. Granada Conservatory) is a Mezzo soprano from Andalusia, Spain. She performs opera and concerts around US and Europe (Carnegie Hall, Cami Hall, Guggenheim museum, Accademia di Spagna in Roma, Auditorio Nacional, Madrid, Oratorio Gonfalone di Roma…) She teaches voice technique and confidence on stage. She studied at The Juilliard School of Music, Westminster Choir College, Portland Performing Institute, Real Conservatorio superior de Canto, Madrid, and the Real Conservatorio Superior of Granada, Spain. She was awarded the Portland opera Performing Institute Fellowship, The Elsie Hilliard Hillman Fellowship, and Manuel de Falla Festival fellowship. She taught at Jeunesses Musicales International, Spain, San Sebastian Conservatory, Musical director ¨Choir and Orchestra of Almería´Cathedral¨ Spain, and Accademia Internazionale di musica in Roma, Italy.
STEPHANIE MCGUIRE- MEZZO-SOPRANO recently enjoyed her debut at New York City Opera, in productions of Margaret Garner and Cavalleria rusticana during the fall 2007 season. In May 2008, she was invited back to NYCO, to sing the role of Solo Woman in Scott D. Richards' jazz opera Charlie crosses the nation, as part of VOX, NYCO's new composers' showcase. With the Martina Arroyo Foundation, Stephanie has performed the roles of Dame Quickly (Falstaff), Berta (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Flora (La traviata), and she has covered Suzuki (Madama Butterfly). Stephanie debuted with the Boston Classical Orchestra in March 2004 as Donna Eleonora in Salieri’s First the Music then the Words. She has appeared with many orchestras and ensembles, including the Key West Symphony Orchestra, New York Metro Vocal Arts Ensemble, the Harvard Baroque Ensemble, and the Boston Choral Ensemble.
IRENE SILVERMAN- MEZZO-SOPRANO as acclaimed by “The New York Times as “...formidable. She has a voice with considerable boom and sounds like a candidate for some big roles that often go begging.” At the Des Moines Metro Opera, she undertook the role of Azucena in Verdi’s Il Trovatore, earning praise from The Des Moines Register: “Irene Silverman, as the gypsy Azucena, is simply tremendous. The richness and power of her voice are truly remarkable and her portrayal is a performance not to be missed. She has the potential for true greatness.” She is an experienced stage actress and performed leading roles in Shakespeare, Chekov, Congreve and Coward.

Russian American Cultural Heritage Center (RACH-C) presented a wide ranging Forum on the topic of “Saving Russian Heritage for Adopted Russian Children in the US” held at Columbia University, with the Harriman Institute co-hosting on October 29, 2009.
There were 56 distinguished and diverse participants including linguists, psychologists, writers, bookstores’ owners, clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, representatives of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in NY, and Russian summer camp proprietors. Major agencies were represented such as the National Agency for Adoption of Washington, D.C. American adoptive parents and grandparents of Russian kids, activists; interested parties were also well represented and were very outspoken and articulate in their remarks. Two hours of intense discussion was not enough to surface all the issues that participants are involved with.
Hosting the Forum was Dr. Lynn Visson, a writer, researcher, interpreter who also spoke on the role of retaining the heritage language. Julio Rodriquez, a co-founder of RACH-C, President of the Culturelink Corporation and a psychologist by education, spoke on the issues of cultural identity. Dr. Olga Zatsepina, President of RACH-C spoke on the programs that RACH-C has already done, and on the projects for adoptive families to save Russian culture for their kids that RACH-C is working on.
Stating that it was unveiling its best approaches based on what RACH-C now knows, Dr. Zatsepina presented the plans for projects that RACH-C is doing for Russian kids in 2009 and invited the attendees to comment on them and help modify their direction. The interested parties expressed opinions on the desirability of creating opportunities for adopted kids to know about their heritage and the problems connected to trying to achieve that. Participants strongly supported the post adoption work that RACH-C is doing and emphasized the necessity and importance of those efforts in the lives of adopted Russian children and their American families.
